Close up of a woman’s leg with tiny spider veins before undergoing laser therapy and sclerotherapy Spider veins are small, but they can have a big effect on your self-confidence and make you feel unhappy with your appearance. Fortunately, spider veins are treatable at SafiraMD Medical Aesthetics & Wellness Center. Our experienced team, led by Dr. Andrea Volk, offers advanced spider vein treatments at a state-of-the-art luxury medical spa in Alpharetta, GA.

Dr. Volk takes time to get to know our patients and understand individual goals before recommending any procedure. With decades of combined experience in injectables, lasers, and advanced skin therapies, our team provides results that not only enhance appearance but also boost confidence.

Our patients deserve the full spectrum of treatment options, so we offer the two leading spider vein therapies: laser therapy and sclerotherapy. But, which is better? It all depends on the size, location, and visibility of the veins being treated. Here’s what to know about each option.

How Sclerotherapy Works

Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective and time-tested methods for treating spider veins. During the procedure, Dr. Volk injects a liquid solution into the spider veins using a very thin needle. This solution irritates the vein walls, causing them to seal off and redirecting blood flow to healthier nearby vessels.

Over time, the treated veins naturally collapse and fade, leaving the skin smoother and clearer. With small spider veins, many patients see results within just a few weeks.

Sclerotherapy is often recommended for spider veins on the legs or larger surface blood vessels. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities the same day. Usually, a series of sclerotherapy sessions is needed to fully clear spider veins.

How Laser Therapy Works

Laser therapy is another highly effective treatment, especially for smaller or more delicate spider veins. It works by delivering focused light energy through the skin’s surface and into the blood vessels. The laser targets the hemoglobin — which gives blood its color — within the veins. Gently heating the hemoglobin causes the vein to wither. As with sclerotherapy, the vein fades over time.

For small spider veins, such as those in the cheeks, laser treatment is often preferred. Laser therapy may also be a good option for spider veins on the chest or legs, particularly in areas where sclerotherapy may be less practical. Patients often describe the sensation as a brief snap of warmth, with no downtime afterward.

In many cases, it can quickly vanish spider veins, although it may take a few weeks to fade fully. Depending on how many spider veins you have and their complexity, you could need multiple treatment sessions.

Can the Two Be Combined?

In some cases, combining laser and sclerotherapy treatments provides the most comprehensive results. For example, veins are often treated first with sclerotherapy, followed by laser therapy to refine remaining small vessels.
